The Sports Editor manages a team that reports on all things Cal Poly Athletics. From game recaps to in-depth features exploring the stories behind the athletes and sports at Cal Poly, these stories will be turned into the editor to edit and publish for web and print publications. The Sports Editor will assign game recaps to reporters each week to ensure every sport on campus is receiving coverage while also working with reporters to pitch, write and publish more detailed sports feature stories. The Sports Editor must be closely following each of Cal Poly’s Division I sports to ensure accurate coverage of each team.
Responsibilities:
- Managing and communicating with a team of sports reporters
- Assigning game recaps to reporters as well as fielding pitches and assigning feature stories
- Editing stories in AP style, editing and publishing with WordPress
- Attending weekly MMG staff and editor meetings
- Remain in contact with the sports information directors for each sport to preserve the great relationship between Cal Poly Athletics and Mustang Media Group
- Manage the @cpmustangsports Instagram account, making sure every sport is receiving social media coverage
- Keeping up with all of Cal Poly Athletics to ensure adequate coverage
- Manage and prepare the sports side of Mustang GameDay, MMG’s sports pregame show that is put on about 10 times per school year
