Overview: The News Editor manages news coverage across all platforms and reports to the Mustang News Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief. The News Editor understands and coordinates all story assignments from the news desk, including all stories being reported on from within Mustang News and in classes that directly contribute content to Mustang News. This person must work with all platform managers and editors to plan comprehensive coverage of the most important stories, and consider multimedia aspects that can be coordinated with video, photo, and KCPR teams.
Responsibilities:
- Understand the “big picture” when it comes to news at Cal Poly and the surrounding community.
- Stay abreast of local media stories and understand community trends. Understand national trends and news stories and localize them to interest Mustang News’ audience.
- Hire, train team of 8-14 news reporters, hiring mid-year if vacancies arise
- Hear pitches, and assign, edit, and publish stories on a daily basis from news reporters
- Attend all JOUR 352 class sessions as a TA along with the Assistant News Editor.
- Assign, edit, and publish spot stories for students in JOUR 352. Work with JOUR 352 reporters when pitching enterprise stories.
- Manage day-to-day breaking news coverage, edit and publish breaking news stories in a timely fashion.
- Work with the social media team to promote all published news stories on social media platforms, especially breaking news stories.
- Write breaking news or longer-form news stories when necessary.
- Over the summer, coordinate essential coverage, prepare and host staff training.
- Promote collaboration with other teams to ensure comprehensive coverage.
- Attend all Mustang News print production days, working with the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief to edit pages and make editorial decisions.
- Assign photographers and designers to web and print stories, depending on the elements each story needs.
- Be enrolled/attend J455 weekly
Salary: Hours equaling around $500 per month
