Working closely with the News Editor, Managing Editor, Editor-in-Chief and platform managers, the Assistant News Editor helps diversify our news coverage of Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo. The Assistant News Editor will produce news stories for publication, similar to that of news multimedia journalists.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the News Editor in assigning and editing news stories from Journalism 352 (Advanced Newspaper Writing Practicum) and the news team on Mustang News
- Edit stories for structure and Associated Press/Mustang News style
- Communicate with reporters and answer questions about sources, newsgathering and writing
- Assist with breaking news or live coverage as needed
- Produce content as a News MMJ, meaning you will pitch and report on stories affecting both Cal Poly and the campus community across Mustang Media Group platforms
- Collaborate with editors and other multimedia journalists on comprehensive coverage
- Work alongside social media editors to develop social media-native content and promote your stories via social platforms; including but not limited to info videos and live tweeting
- Attend weekly Sunday editorial staff meetings either in person or via Zoom
This is a great position for someone interested in mentoring other reporters, understanding the news publishing process from start to finish and editing.
We are looking for team players with a drive to learn and a passion for storytelling. Mustang Media Group members thrive on innovation while ambitiously seeking to hone their craft and improve their communities.
Whether your goal is to pursue a career in journalism or gain experience as an editor, Mustang Media Group is the best place to get a comprehensive campus experience. No editing experience is required, but experience writing for Mustang News is preferred.
