California Government Reporter

The Government Reporter position is a specialized news reporting position that covers politics on the state level. The reporters will use Digital Democracy, a tool built by Cal Poly faculty and CalMatters to break down issues. This is a multimedia role and reporters will be expected to produce written and digital content.

Reporters are expected to:

  • Write timely stories based on assigned beats roughly every week
  • Publish through the MN breaking system weekly
  • Stay aware of current local, state, and national political trends
  • Create innovative ways to explain statewide issues including, but not limited to, video explainers, audio explainers, etc.

Responsibilities while writing include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceiving and planning story ideas
  • Interviewing sources
  • Writing, capturing, and editing content.

Government Reporters are expected to submit high-quality work; these should be thoughtful pieces backed up by ideas, sources and facts. Reporters will be responsible for all these duties and any other duties as assigned.

Compensation: This position is currently unpaid, but there are opportunities to grow within the organization to a paid position.
