Overview of the role: The Sports Content Director (SCD) serves as the primary leader of the Mustang News sports team, overseeing content production, communication, and collaboration between sports section editors and other editorial teams. This role ensures that all sports coverage is well-organized, high-quality and aligned with the newsroom’s overall content strategy. The SCD may be enrolled in JOUR 455, a class for MMG leaders, providing structured leadership experience while working closely with editors, reporters, and multimedia staff.
- Act as the primary point of communication between the sports section and other newsroom teams, ensuring streamlined collaboration.
- Oversee and support the Sports Copy Editor, Sports Video Editor, Sports Social Media Manager, and KCPR Sports Manager, providing guidance on content strategy and execution.
- Lead the hiring process for sports section editors, working with newsroom leadership to conduct interviews and select candidates.
- Manage sports coverage, assigning stories, providing editorial feedback, and ensuring timely publication of content across print, digital, and social platforms.
- Coordinate with the social media and video teams to enhance audience engagement and multimedia storytelling for sports coverage.
- Work alongside the newsroom leadership team to align sports content with broader editorial goals and audience engagement strategies.
- Provide mentorship and training to section editors and contributors, fostering a strong and collaborative sports journalism team.
